Chapter 10

MIA MARVELED AT THE EFFICIENCY OF THE EL train even as her shoulder throbbed and her neck muscles screamed. Any time Mia sat down, her exhaustion sat with her.

Chicago whizzed by her window. After a disconcerting flight plagued by masked zombies, she was embarking on the second half of her journey, to Rachel. For all Mia knew, this would be the last time she could leave her house. She would finish what she started. Mia had seen on the airport televisions, as she hunched over a cup of six-dollar coffee, that people were maniacally Cloroxing their vegetables now. Mia would not be Cloroxing her vegetables. Death was coming for whom it was coming for, no matter what. She’d seen it firsthand, twice over. That said, she would certainly wear a mask and scour her hands. She didn’t want to die because she was an idiot.

Rachel had asked Mia if she wanted to be picked up at the airport, but Mia wanted to take the El. It reminded her of the New York subway, and the subway reminded her of her husband. She had met him on the subway, which sounded made up but wasn’t.

She looked at the damp Post-it in her hand, on which the names of three train stations were scrawled, and then she looked at the map on the wall.

She had time. Time to remember. She leaned against the window and then thought better of it and sat up straight.

The morning she had met her husband, he was standing on the grafittied train platform in the Brooklyn spring air, his dark hair damp. For four years Mia had been seeing him on the train; for four years he had been her “subway crush,” and for four years she had never gotten up the nerve to say hello to him.

But on that day, she decided to do it.

It would either go right or horribly wrong, but if it was the latter, she would just have to change subway lines, which was annoying but not the end of the world.

A train had pulled in as Mia descended the last of the stairs, and out of habit, she had jumped on, just in time to realize that her subway crush had not. And then, there he was again, gliding through the gap just as the doors reopened, and with two friends in tow.

Two friends she knew! She had felt lucky that day, for the first time in her life.

Her hands had been trembling when she told him.

“I see you on the train all the time!”

Her voice had shaken.

“I see you too!” he had replied, in a voice that was not at all the voice that she had imagined. A kind voice.

God, that moment. Mia replayed it in her mind as often as she could. She had known in her heart, as she walked down Sixth Avenue in the spring air afterward, that Subway Crush would be her husband. It sounded nuts—it had felt nuts to her at the time—but she had felt it nonetheless.
